The roadmap is not the strategy
Technology roadmap and strategy
A technology roadmap is a tool for communicating and executing strategy, not the strategy itself. Organizations that confuse the two spend a lot of time building detailed roadmaps that do not hold up when priorities shift, because the roadmap was never grounded in a clear strategic rationale. When a roadmap is built on top of an explicit set of technology priorities that are themselves tied to business outcomes, it is much easier to adjust intelligently when circumstances change. When it is not, every change requires starting over.
